Prohibited Items & Safety Policy

To ensure the safety of all participants, staff, volunteers, and guests, and to maintain compliance with the City of Folsom Fire Code and venue safety regulations, the following rules apply to all performances and activities at the Lenaea High School Theatre Festival.

1. Weapons and Prop Weapons

  • Monologues, Duo Scenes, and Musical Theatre Solos:
The use of weapons or weapon replicas is strictly prohibited in these performance categories. This includes real or replica firearms, airsoft or pellet guns, knives, swords, martial arts weapons, or any item that could reasonably be perceived as a weapon, regardless of whether it is dulled, inoperable, or intended only as a prop.

  • One-Act Plays:
Prop weapons may be used only in accordance with the Festival’s Prop Weapons Storage and Handling Policy. Approved prop weapons must be checked in upon arrival and stored in the designated secure area when not in use on stage. Real weapons, functional firearms, or any item capable of causing harm are never permitted.

2. Open Flame and Pyrotechnics

In accordance with the City of Folsom Fire Code and the California Fire Code (Title 24, Part 9), the use of open flame (candles, matches, lighters), pyrotechnics, sparklers, heated fog machines, or any other ignition source is strictly prohibited anywhere within the Harris Center for the Arts or on the campus of Folsom Lake College.

3. Hazardous or Flammable Substances

Flammable liquids or aerosols (e.g., spray paint, adhesives, fog fluid), pressurized gas canisters, or any chemical that could emit harmful fumes or residues are prohibited.

4. Explosives, Firecrackers, and Smoke Devices

Materials designed to detonate, emit smoke, or create loud explosive effects are not allowed under any circumstances.

5. Airborne Particulates and Loose Materials

Glitter, confetti, loose powders, or other substances that could affect air quality, damage equipment, or create slip hazards may not be used on stage or backstage.

6. Live Animals

Live animals and preserved specimens are prohibited, with the sole exception of ADA-qualified service animals.

7. Rigging, Aerial Effects, and Large Scenery

  • No flying or suspension of performers, props, or scenery from venue infrastructure is allowed.

  • All scenery must be safe to move, free of sharp edges, and within size/weight limits appropriate for the Harris Center stage and backstage pathways.

8. Electrical & Special Effects Equipment

Only venue-approved extension cords, power strips, and electrical devices may be used. High-voltage lighting, personal fog/haze machines requiring heat, or any other unapproved special effects equipment are prohibited.

9. Excessive Noise Levels

Blanks, explosive sound effects, or any noise levels that could trigger fire alarms, damage hearing, or disrupt other performances are not permitted.

Compliance Reminder
Schools are responsible for ensuring all props, set pieces, costumes, and technical elements comply with these safety requirements. Prohibited items may be confiscated, and violations may result in performance delays or removal from the Festival schedule.
